Specialized Aethos adds more affordable Pro & Expert models, still sub-700g

"The earth-shatteringly lightweight Specialized Aethos has very quickly added two new models. They’re more affordable, and they’re both still really light. The Aethos Pro and Aethos Expert road bikes share the same new molds and tube shapes, but use a slightly more standard layup to bring prices starting at less than

2024 Specialized Aethos Review - A TPC Quick-Take

The Specialized Aethos is a high-performance road bike that has received significant attention and praise from cycling enthusiasts and reviewers alike. Designed with a focus on delivering an exceptional riding experience, the Aethos represents Specialized's pursuit of creating a bike that prioritizes handling, responsiveness, and comfort over pure aerodynamic efficiency.

Pros

  • Handling and responsiveness: The Aethos is widely praised for its excellent handling characteristics, with reviewers describing it as "intuitive and excellently balanced between agility and composure." The bike's direct yet composed steering, combined with its lively and engaging feel, instills confidence in the rider, particularly on winding roads and technical climbs.
  • Climbing prowess: The Aethos shines when the road points upwards, with its lightweight construction and efficient power transfer allowing for effortless acceleration and climbing performance. Reviewers have noted that the bike is "always willing to accelerate," whether on flat roads or steep inclines.
  • Comfort and vibration damping: Despite its race-oriented geometry, the Aethos offers a surprisingly comfortable ride quality, with effective vibration damping that helps to smooth out rough road surfaces.
  • Aesthetics and attention to detail: The Aethos is praised for its sleek and elegant design, with clean lines, internal cable routing, and a stance that turns heads on the road. Specialized's attention to detail is clear in the bike's construction and finish.

Cons

  • Limited efficiency at high speeds: Due to its lack of aerodynamic optimization, the Aethos struggles to maintain high speeds and hold the pace compared to more aero-focused road bikes. This may be a consideration for riders who prioritize straight-line speed and efficiency.
  • Gravel and rough terrain limitations: The Aethos, with its narrow tires and lack of high-speed compliance, is better suited for smooth asphalt roads than rough gravel or poor-quality tarmac. Riders who frequently encounter such terrain may find the bike's capabilities somewhat limited in those scenarios.
  • High price point: the Aethos, particularly in its top-end S-Works configuration, carries a premium price tag that may be out of reach for some riders. While the bike's performance and craftsmanship justify the cost, it may not offer the best value proposition for those on a tighter budget.

Bottom Line

The Aethos is a remarkable road bike that prioritizes ride quality, handling, and responsiveness over pure aerodynamic efficiency. Its lightweight construction, excellent climbing abilities, and comfortable yet engaging ride characteristics make it a compelling choice for riders who value an exceptional and immersive cycling experience. While it may not be the most practical option for high-speed riding or rough terrain, the Aethos shines on smooth, winding roads and challenging climbs, delivering a level of performance and enjoyment that few other bikes can match.
