Project bikes are more fun. Starting with a road frameset and building it to your own specifications means the resulting bike more personal and better adapted to your riding.
Used doesn’t necessarily mean old; we’ve always got plenty of last year’s models for sale. Here’s where you make your first decision with a road bike frame for sale: high tech, new tech, old tech. Maybe it’s a Cannondale road bike frame, with budget-friendly aluminum. Or perhaps, it’s a Pinarello frame, like the Dogma F8, a Tour-dominating ride. Then again, a titanium road bike frame could be a forever-bike and easy on the body. But possibly a Cervélo RCA would be best for how it floats on climbs. The frame helps set up your position and states your intentions.
Road bikes have a pretty wide range of what can be ridden, but if you anticipate adding rough unpaved roads to your ride diet, gravel frames might be a better choice.
How To Build a Bike From the Ground Up
Carbon Framesets
Carbon-fiber is the miracle material. Wielded by wizards, the frame can be strong, light, stiff, and compliant at the same time. Simultaneously, it can be hard to tell from afar if a used frame is structurally sound. That’s why we have our Certified Pre-Owned program. With CPO, you are assured that the frame is safe and sound.
Specialized Framesets
Specialized makes bikes that ride as good as they look. If price is a constraint, the Allez Sprint Frameset packs lots of bang for little buck. At the other end of the Specialized spectrum, the Aethos S-Works frameset has a dreamy ride.
Trek Framesets
Trek road bike frames are famously neutral. They hit a middle ground in several criteria. Within the Trek stable, their frames have specific flavors, though the Trek Emonda might be the most versatile of them all. Billed as the climbing bike, it still is aero, stiff, and comfortable.
Steel Road Bike Frames
Steel is the province of Colnago frames and Bianchi framesets, possibly topped with a Cinelli bar/stem combo, dressed in cork tape. A perfect base for building an Eroica ride (provided it’s a rim-brake frameset and a few other things), a training bike, a ride that is smoother than hot butter on a muffin. Even ex-pros, people who needed the lightest, stiffest bike to do their job, find themselves lured by, and sold on, the siren song of steel.
Carbon Fiber vs. Aluminum Bike Frames: What's Better? - From TPC's Magazine
The frame is a bicycle's heart and soul. It binds all the components together into a cohesive machine. It is the bike's identity. Without it, a bike is nothing. But what kind of soul should your bike have? Does it have a space-age carbon-fiber frame or an affordable aluminum frame?
