What are the differences between Roval Rapide and Alpinist wheelsets, and which one should I choose?

Roval road wheels are divided into two categories: Rapide and Alpinist.

  • Rapide Wheelsets. Designed with aerodynamics in mind, these wheels are ideal for riders focused on speed, such as road racers and time trialists. The Rapide series features deeper rims and a wider external width for better airflow and stability. They’re built to be stiff, fast, and stable, especially at high speeds. However, they tend to be heavier than the Alpinist series.
    • Best for: Flat and rolling terrain, racing, and riders looking for maximum aerodynamic performance.
  • Alpinist Wheels: Focus on minimizing weight, making them perfect for climbing and riders who prioritize lightweight performance. The Alpinist CLX II, for example, has a shallower rim depth of 33mm and weighs just 1,265g per set. These wheels use lightweight hubs and are optimized for acceleration and hill climbing. While less aerodynamic than the Rapide series, they are still versatile enough for various riding styles.
    • Best for Climbers, long-distance riders, and those looking for a lightweight, versatile wheelset.

If you’re looking mainly for speed and aerodynamic performance, the Rapide series is a better choice. If you want a lightweight, responsive wheel for climbing and all-around performance, consider the Alpinist series.

Are Roval wheels compatible with different tire setups and brake types?

Yes, Roval wheels are designed to be very versatile and compatible with a range of tire setups and brake types:

  • Tubeless-Ready. All Roval wheels are tubeless-ready, with pre-installed rim tape. You can easily switch to a tubeless tire setup by adding a tubeless tire and sealant. Roval rims are known for their easy tubeless setup, and a high-volume floor pump is usually sufficient for installation—no compressor needed.
  • Centerlock Disc Brakes. Roval wheels are compatible with centerlock disc brake rotors, which have become the standard for road and gravel wheels. This makes them ideal for use with disc-brake-equipped bikes.
  • Hub Spacing. All Roval wheels adhere to the industry standard thru-axle hub spacing of 12 x 100mm (front) and 12 x 142mm (rear). While thru-axle adapters may be available for quick-release use, these wheels are specifically designed for disc brakes and do not support rim brakes.
  • Freehub Bodies. Roval wheels come with a standard Shimano 11/12 speed HG-style freehub, compatible with all Shimano road cassettes (10-speed and lower cassettes require a spacer) and SRAM road cassettes up to 11-speed. To use a 12-speed SRAM cassette, you'll need a SRAM XDR freehub body. Freehub bodies for Campagnolo cassettes are also available, depending on the hub.

Roval wheels have the flexibility for tubeless setups and are designed for center-lock disc brakes. They support various drivetrains but check compatibility with your cassette and brake type before purchasing.
