Designed initially as a cyclocross machine, it has evolved into a gravel racer worthy of a cyclocross course. Increased tire clearance, reduced weight, and longer reach creates a racy, agile riding position that handles fast gravel roads and easy, flowy trails. Several models are available from the Comp, Pro, Expert, and the first-class CruX S-Works. Electronic shifting options, hydraulic disc brakes, and uber-lightweight carbon frames give this bike an incredibly smooth, capable, and ultra-responsive feel.

2023 Specialized CruX  Review - A TPC Quick-Take

The Specialized Crux is an iconic gravel bike, blending elements of cyclocross and road racing into a versatile, high-performance package. Designed to be a "do-it-all" drop-bar bike, the Crux looks to excel across a wide range of terrain and riding disciplines, from gravel races to cyclocross competitions and everything in between.

Pros

Exceptional handling and responsiveness: The Crux's geometry strikes an excellent balance between stability and agility, delivering a lively and engaging ride quality that feels equally at home on paved roads, gravel paths, and technical singletrack. Reviewers have praised the bike's precise and intuitive handling, with one noting that it "feels so much more responsive under hard pedaling that it felt like cheating" compared to a dedicated cyclocross bike.

Lightweight and efficient: Specialized designed the Crux to be remarkably light, with the top-end S-Works model tipping the scales at just 7.3kg (16.9 lbs).

This feathery weight, combined with the bike's efficient power transfer, makes it an excellent climber and sprinter, with one reviewer describing the Crux as "a truly eager companion on steeper climbs and a joy to spin away on."

Versatile tire clearance: The Crux can accommodate a wide range of tire sizes, from 700x33mm to 700x47mm or 650x2.1", allowing riders to tailor the bike's capabilities to their preferred terrain and riding style.

Cons

Limited accessory mounts: Unlike many modern gravel bikes, the Crux forgoes additional accessory mounts, such as those for fenders, racks, or top tube bags. This design decision, while keeping the bike light and streamlined, may limit its appeal to riders seeking a more versatile, all-purpose machine.

High price point: The top-end S-Works Crux carries a hefty price tag, putting it firmly in the premium category of gravel bikes. While the build quality and performance are undoubtedly excellent, the value proposition may not appeal to all riders, especially those on a tighter budget.

Bottom Line

The Specialized Crux is a remarkable cyclocross bike that blends the best attributes of cyclocross and road racing into a highly capable and engaging package. Its lightweight, efficient, and responsive ride quality makes it a joy to ride on a wide range of terrain, from smooth tarmac to technical singletrack. While the lack of accessory mounts and steep descending confidence may limit its appeal to some riders, the Crux is a standout for riders seeking a high-performance, do-it-all drop-bar bike.
