The Octal road helmet is already pretty protective, but what the Octal X Spin adds is that extra level of coverage with the extended shell. That extra material not only protects more of the back of your head, in case you end up going tail over tea kettle at some point, but it makes the structure overall much stronger. The helmet has also been integrated with the special SPIN (Shearing Pad Inside) pads, which are designed to dissipate rotational energy on impact. And the aramid bridge technology which has been added to EPS liner does its job by enhancing the structural integrity without adding weight.
