to be used.

When it was released in 2018, the Canyon Grail’s handlebars were what everyone was talking about. The “hoverbar” is an integrated system that provides compliance and precise control on rough roads. The Canyon Grail is an excellent-handling-everything machine built to accept up to 42mm tires. It is maneuverable and comfy on the dirt while remaining fast on the road. Canyon sees it as a “light gravel” bike in their quiver, featuring endurance-bike geometry so that most people can find a comfortable position.

There are two carbon-fiber versions, the CF SL and SLX, an e-bike version known as the ON CF (which has room for 50mm tires), and an aluminum version. The SLX is almost superbike-light at 830g for the frame. The CF’s have the hoverbar and Canyon’s VCLS compliance seatpost. The aluminum has a conventional cockpit and a 27.2mm round seatpost. Canyon has hidden integrated mounts for its fenders and has designed their own frame and handlebar bags for long days and bikepacking.

2023 Canyon Grail  CF SLX 8 Di2 - A TPC Quick-Take, A Gravel Speed Demon

The Canyon Grail CF SLX 8 Di2 is a no-holds-barred gravel race machine that's been stripped of its predecessor's quirks and honed for pure speed. This carbon fiber rocket sports Shimano's GRX Di2 electronic shifting, DT Swiss GRC1400 Spline carbon hoops, and a host of integrated features aimed at the competitive gravel rider.

Pros:

  1. Lightning-fast and responsive on varied terrain
  2. Excellent power transfer and climbing efficiency
  3. Aerodynamic improvements over the previous model
  4. Innovative integrated storage solutions
  5. High-quality spec at a competitive price point
  6. Sleek aesthetics with improved cockpit design

Cons:

  1. Stiff ride may be unforgiving on technical terrain
  2. Limited tire clearance (max 42mm) compared to some rivals
  3. Proprietary components may limit customization options
  4. Some users report Di2 reliability issues in cold conditions

The Dirt: The Grail CF SLX 8 Di2 is a proper gravel rocket, built for riders who prioritize speed and efficiency. The bike absolutely rails on hard-packed surfaces and tarmac, with the aero tubing and integrated features helping you slice through the wind. The stiff frame and efficient power transfer make this rig a climbing beast, encouraging out-of-the-saddle efforts on every incline.

Canyon's attention to detail shines through with the frame's integrated storage, Fidlock-compatible frame bag, and sleek bolt-free fender mounts. The redesigned cockpit is a massive improvement over the previous model's divisive double-decker bars, offering a comfortable and controlled ride in various hand positions.

However, this speed demon shows its hand when the going gets rough. The frame's stiffness, while great for power transfer, can feel harsh on technical descents or chunky terrain. Riders looking for a more forgiving ride might want to look elsewhere.

The 42mm tire clearance, while sufficient for most gravel racing, may limit versatility for those wanting to tackle more adventurous routes. Additionally, the proprietary components, while slick, could be a headache for those who like to tinker or upgrade.

Bottom Line: The Canyon Grail CF SLX 8 Di2 is a purpose-built gravel race bike that does well in its intended use. It's blazingly fast, climbs like a mountain goat, and offers excellent value for money. If you're a competitive gravel rider or someone who prioritizes speed on mixed surfaces, this bike should be high on your list. However, if you're after a more versatile all-rounder or prefer a cushy ride for long days in the saddle, you might want to look at Canyon's Grizl or at other options. The Grail CF SLX 8 Di2 is a specialized tool, and in the right hands, it's a podium contender straight out of the box.
