2023 Bombtrack Beyond Review - A TPC Quick-Take

The Bombtrack Beyond 2 is a super versatile touring and adventure bike, praised for its comfort and adaptability for long-distance rides. Here's our Quick-take review:

Pros:

  • Comfort and versatility: the Beyond 2 is typically noted for its great comfort, making it ideal for long rides. It's built with a full steel frame and fork, using no-nonsense Chromoly steel, which balances weight and compliance for a comfortable ride. Its design caters to a variety of riding styles and surfaces, from hardpack gravel to rocky trails.
  • Durable and practical design: the bike features a durable all-steel frame, ample mounting points for bags, bottles, and racks, and internal routing for dynamo cables. it's designed with practicality in mind, especially for remote and challenging terrains.
  • Dynamo lighting system: the Beyond 2 includes a high-performance Supernova E3 dynamo lighting system, which is efficient with little drag, enhancing safety and visibility without significantly impacting riding effort and the need for batteries.
  • Wheel and tire options: it comes in two wheel size options, with the larger sizes using 29" wheels and the smaller frames equipped with 27.5" wheels. This choice allows for better balance and geometry scaling to the rider's size.
  • Responsive and stable ride: its geometry, including a long wheelbase and slack head angle, contributes to a stable and responsive ride. The 50mm Gravel King tires are well-suited for various surfaces, providing a smooth ride without significant speed loss.

Cons:

  • Mechanical disc brakes: the Beyond 2 features TRP Spyre C mechanical disc brakes instead of hydraulic brakes for better reliability, which may require more effort, particularly on long descents.
  • Gearing limitations: some riders noted that the gear range, particularly the high-bottom gear, might be inadequate for expedition riding with heavy loads. Modifying the gearing for steeper terrains may be necessary.
  • Lack of rear rack: the Beyond 2 doesn't come with a rear rack, which could be a downside for those looking for more carrying capacity.
  • Price consideration: despite its high-quality features, the price point may feel steep, especially considering the lack of hydraulic brakes and a rear rack.

Bottom Line:

The Bombtrack Beyond 2 is a solid choice for adventure cyclists looking for a durable, comfortable, and versatile bike capable of handling various terrains and long distances. Its steel frame, dynamo lighting system, and thoughtful design make it a reliable companion for extended touring and daily commuting.
