Pittsburgh, PA Bike Laws, Regulations & Tips

Stay up to date on Pennsylvania bike laws and seasonal riding tips.

Cycling Laws:

General Riding Laws: Bicyclists are not allowed to ride more than two abreast on roadways, except on paths or parts of the roadway designated for exclusive bicycle use. Motor vehicles must provide at least 4 feet of clearance when overtaking bicycles and do so at a prudent speed. It's illegal to open vehicle doors on the traffic side without ensuring it is safe to do so, a rule designed to prevent "dooring" accidents with cyclists.

Equipment and Riding on Roadways: Your bicycle must have a front lamp and rear and side reflectors if you are riding between sunset and sunrise. Bikes should be equipped with functioning brakes and, in some areas, a bell or other signal devices are also required.

While on the road, ride in the rightmost lane that serves your destination. Take the center of the lane when necessary for safety, especially to avoid hazards or if the lane is too narrow for cars and bicycles to share side by side safely.

Sidewalks and Crosswalks: Riding on sidewalks is generally not permitted in business districts or where a bike lane is available. Pedestrians have the right of way on sidewalks and paths, so give an audible warning when overtaking them.

It's recommended to dismount and walk your bike across crosswalks to avoid conflicts with vehicles, as automobiles are not required to yield to bicycles in crosswalks.

Helmets and Safety Gear: Anyone under the age of 12 is required by Pennsylvania law to wear a helmet while riding a bicycle. Though not mandated for all ages, helmet use is strongly recommended for everyone. Wearing bright clothing and using reflectors and lights can increase visibility and safety, especially in low-light conditions.

Seasonal Tips:

Spring:

This is a great time to check your bike after the winter. Perform maintenance checks, especially on brakes and gears. Pittsburgh's spring can still be quite wet, so fenders can help keep you dry, and using lights in variable weather conditions is a good practice.

Summer:

Hydration is key in the hotter months. Always carry water with you, and plan routes that offer shade and places to rest. Summer is also a good time to explore Pittsburgh's bike trails and enjoy the extended daylight. The Pittsburgh Bike Map offers various routes that are perfect for summer explorations.

Fall:

As leaves begin to fall, they can create slippery surfaces, particularly when wet. Be cautious of leaf buildup and potential hidden road hazards. Fall is also the time to start preparing for earlier sunsets by ensuring your bike's lighting is adequate.

Winter:

With cold temperatures and potential snow, it's necessaryl to layer clothing and consider winter-specific bike tires for better traction. Lights and reflective gear are also essential due to shorter daylight hours. Although specific winter tips weren't found in the sources, POGOH's blog mentions general bike safety and commuting tips, which can be useful in winter planning.
