Bikes are meant
to be used.

The Specialized Venge won countless races under Peter Sagan, Mark Cavendish, and Step Wolfpack. At the time, the Venge was one of the best aero road bikes around. Aerodynamic, stiff, and reasonably light, it did everything very well. It is now gone but not forgotten.

The bike debuted in 2011 with a win at the 300km Milan-San Remo classic. While the sprint was close, the energy it saved throughout 300km was significant. The Venge was revised to the Venge ViAS in 2014, adding integration to the rim brakes and stem. Disc brakes were added in 2017, shortly after the bike was entirely revised in 2018. It was discontinued in 2020 when Specialized saw they could get the aerodynamics of the Venge and weight of the Tarmac SL6 into one bike, the Tarmac SL7.

S-Works is the pro racing designation in the S-World. Not everything has an S-Works version, but what does is a cut above. For frames, they almost always come out of the same molds as less-expensive iterations, but use higher-grade carbon plies, resulting in a lighter frame.

2023 Specialized S-Works Venge Review - A TPC Quick-Take

The Specialized S-Works Venge sits at the tippy top of aero road bike evolution. This wind-cheating marvel combines cutting-edge aerodynamics with surprising versatility, making it a formidable weapon for criteriums, road races, and fast gran fondos alike. Boasting a FACT 11r carbon frame, Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 groupset, and Roval CLX 64 wheels, the Venge is a no-compromise speed machine that's ready to demolish Strava KOMs and podium at your local circuit.

Pros:

  • Aero is Everything: The Venge slices through the wind like a hot knife through butter. Its refined tube shapes and integrated cockpit translate to tangible speed gains across all terrains.
  • Featherweight Aero: Tipping the scales at a svelte 6.9kg for a 56cm frame, the Venge defies the "aero bikes are heavy" stereotype. It climbs with the eagerness of a mountain goat.
  • Versatile Performance: Whether you're smashing out intervals, grinding up long climbs, or diving into technical descents, the Venge feels composed and confidence-inspiring.
  • Pro-Level Spec: The S-Works build leaves nothing to be desired, with top-tier components that perform flawlessly under pressure.
  • Surprising Comfort: Despite its aggressive stance, the Venge offers all-day ride quality that won't leave you feeling beaten up after a century.

Cons:

  • Price Tag: Be prepared to shell out some serious coin for this thoroughbred. It's an investment that'll make your wallet weep.
  • Crosswind Sensitivity: The deep-section Roval CLX 64 wheels can be a handful for lighter riders in gusty conditions.
  • Proprietary Components: Some parts are Specialized-specific, which may limit customization options and complicate repairs.
  • Stealth Aesthetics: While the clean lines are stunning, some riders will miss the option for more eye-catching colorways.

The Ride: Throw a leg over the Venge, and you'll immediately feel the urge to attack. The bike accelerates with an eagerness that'll have you checking your power meter in disbelief. On the flats, it's an absolute missile – you'll find yourself effortlessly holding speeds that used to require a full gas effort.

Climbing performance is where the Venge truly shines compared to its aero competitors. Its impressive stiffness-to-weight ratio means every watt is translated into forward motion. You might not dance up the climbs like Pantani, but you'll certainly dispatch them with more ease than you'd expect from an aero rig.

When the road points down, the Venge's stable geometry inspires confidence. It tracks through high-speed corners with laser precision, allowing you to carry more speed through technical sections. The Shimano Dura-Ace disc brakes offer exceptional modulation, letting you brake later and harder when necessary.

In the group, the Venge's refined aerodynamics mean you'll be spending less time in the wind and more time sheltered in the pack. When it's time to make your move, the bike responds instantly to power inputs, perfect for bridging gaps or launching attacks.

Bottom Line: The Specialized S-Works Venge is a tour de force of engineering that lives up to its lofty promises. It's a versatile speedster that excels in virtually every situation, from flat criteriums to mountainous gran fondos. Yes, it comes with a eye-watering price tag, but for the rider seeking the absolute pinnacle of aero road bike performance, the Venge delivers in spades. It's not just an aero bike – it's a super-bike that's ready to elevate your riding to new heights. Just be warned: once you experience the speed and responsiveness of the Venge, your other bikes might start gathering dust.
