Why We Love It:
Mind prepped, body ready, nutrition dialed, equipment on point. The rest is out of your hands. When the gun goes off, a melee ensues. Confidence in ability and your equipment provides an escape from the chaos. The Melee takes design cues from ENVE’s own Custom Road, but where the Custom Road prioritizes customization, the Melee is solely built for speed.
2023 ENVE Melee Review - A TPC Quick-Take, Redefining the Race Bike
The Enve Melee is a cutting-edge road bike that brilliantly balances WorldTour performance with real-world practicality. At 7.7kg (16.9 lbs) for a 56cm frame with a pro-level build, this aerodynamic carbon frameset delivers the speed and responsiveness demanded by Tour de France stage winners while offering features rarely seen in this category.
Features:
- Versatility: With clearance for 35mm tires and hidden mudguard mounts, the Melee transitions seamlessly from criteriums to cobbles to all-weather training.
- Ride Quality: The Melee offers a lively yet incredibly stable ride, striking an excellent balance between road feedback and comfort. It's responsive without being harsh, making it enjoyable on various surfaces.
- Aerodynamics: Despite its less aggressive tube shapes, Enve claims the Melee is more aerodynamic than their Custom Road model, optimized for real-world riding speeds of 32-40km/h.
- Fit and Geometry: Available in seven sizes with five different fork offsets, Enve ensures consistent handling across the range. The geometry delivers sharp, confident cornering while maintaining stability on fast descents.
- Integration: The Melee showcases Enve's component-first approach, with full internal cable routing and compatibility with both electronic and mechanical groupsets.
Performance: The Melee is pretty much a beast as an all-rounder, offering a mix of speed, comfort, and usability. It accelerates efficiently, holds speed with ease, climbs nimbly, and descends with confidence. The frame's balanced compliance provides excellent traction feedback without the harshness often associated with pure race bikes.
Unique Features:
- T47 threaded bottom bracket for easy maintenance
- Compatibility with 35c tires for light gravel use
- Enve's SES wheels complement the frame's aerodynamics
Build Options: Enve offers the Melee as a "chassis" ($5,500), including frame, fork, headset, seatpost, stem, and handlebar. Our test build with Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 and Enve SES 3.4 wheels would retail around $12,000-$13,000.
Considerations: At north of $5k for the frameset (when new), the Melee sits easily in the premium category. Color options were initially limited but now include Aegean Blue and Enve Black alongside the original Damascus Silver. The understated aesthetics may disappoint those seeking more visual flair.
Verdict: The Enve Melee is a winner in high-end race bikes by offering WorldTour performance with added practicality. Its versatility, handling characteristics, and thoughtful design make it a
