The rear cassette is a great bit of bike tech. The cassette body moves wheel bearings outward, which strengthens the wheel. Standard widths help shifting precision with cassettes ranging from six to 13-speeds.

11-speed cassette bodies can typically, with spacers, fit 10- and 9-speed cassettes, but the reverse is not necessarily true.

But with greater precision, compatibility across brands usually suffers. The three major drivetrain companies, Campagnolo, Shimano, and SRAM, have different ideas and designs, so, as a result, their cassettes aren’t always cross-compatible. 11-speed cassette spacing is pretty universal, but the Campy cassette splines are different from Shimano/SRAM. With 12-speed cassettes, all three companies have different cassette bodies, and the spacing isn’t necessarily the same, which matters when shifting. The cassette brand doesn’t have to match the shifting brand, but the cassette spacing needs to be really close for shifting to work.

Mountain Bike Cassettes

MTB cassettes have gotten big, thanks to 1x becoming the new norm. As a result, there are some incredibly wide-ranging cassettes, like 10-52 teeth. While such a wide range makes it possible to climb extremely steep walls, they also get heavy. That’s why many wide-ranging cassettes employ as many weight-saving tricks as possible. Riveted carriers, extensive machining, mixing metals, and more.

Road Bike Cassettes

Thanks to the increasing number of cogs, road bike cassettes have also become wider. But an 11-28 cassette, a popular size, is much lighter than a 10-52. Still, the more expensive the cassette, the lighter it typically gets; lighter road bike cassettes use the same weight-saving tricks as MTB cassettes.
