2025 Argon 18 Dark Matter Review - TPC's First Thoughts
The 2025 Argon 18 Dark Matter has been completely redesigned and we must admit, we're not sure if we've ever been so excited to try out an Argon 18. Not to say they haven't made bikes in the past that get us excited, but the redesigned Dark Matter is on a whole new level. It should be noted, we haven't ridden it yet, but what we see on paper and photos is exciting. A newer race-ready geometry combined with an industry leading 700 x 57mm tire clearance (47mm if you choose to run a front derailleur), and a sleek facelift make the new Dark Matter one of the most intriguing gravel bikes of the year.
2023 Argon 18 Dark Matter Review - A TPC Rider's Quick Take
The Canadian-made Argon 18 Dark Matter is a genuine contender in the world of gravel bikes. Known for its versatility and performance, it’s gotten attention for its capabilities in various terrains and conditions. We like it for its surprisingly comfortable ride and high-quality components & rubber. It doesn’t hurt that it looks bad-ass, too.
Pros
- Versatile Use: The Dark Matter is versatile and can serve as a basis for different cycling needs, including bikepacking and off-road adventures.
- Adjustable Geometry: Especially beneficial for smaller riders, its geometry can be significantly altered using Argon 18's 3D System, providing a comfortable and stable ride.
- Comfort: Despite being more leisurely paced, it offers a comfortable riding position and is suitable for longer rides.
- Cargo Capacity: It has ample mounts for carrying cargo, making it suitable for bikepacking adventures.
- Quality Components: The bike features high-quality components like the HUNT 42 LIMITLESS gravel wheelset and Vittoria Terreno Mix tires, contributing to its off-road prowess.
Cons
- Limited Race Performance: It doesn't excel as a dedicated race bike and lacks the responsiveness of some racy gravel bikes.
- Shifting Performance: The SRAM Force AXS 2×12 groupset used for shifting may not meet the requirements for racing due to its response time.
- Stiffness and Agility: The bike is described as lacking in agility and the frame and seat post offer little flex, which might affect comfort and responsiveness.
- Price: At a relatively higher price point within its class, it may seem overpriced compared to its features and performance, especially compared to its rivals.
Bottom Line
The Argon 18 Dark Matter is a solid choice for those seeking a versatile, comfortable gravel bike capable of handling a variety of terrains and suitable for bikepacking. While it may not be the top choice for racers due to its lack of responsiveness and agility, it provides a stable and comfortable ride for longer excursions. Its ability to be customized and adjusted for different riders adds to its appeal, though its price may be a consideration for potential buyers.
