Bikes are meant
to be used.

The Trek Top Fuel is a full suspension XC 29er that craves speed. Current models come equipped with 120mm of front and rear travel with more progressive geometry giving this XC bike a major dose of trail capability. Previous generations come with 100mm of travel and ride more like a traditional fast and light XC bike. If you’re craving an award-winning super fast, snappy ride that can still hold its own on rowdy descents and technical terrain, the Top Fuel is the only choice.

2023 Trek Top Fuel 9.8 Review - A TPC Rider's Quick Take

To say that we were excited to get our hands on a 2023 Trek Top Fuel 9.8 would be a colossal understatement. This rig sits comfortably at the intersection of cross-country speed and trail bike capability, making it one of the most versatile full-suspension mountain bikes we've ridden.

Pros

  • Versatile Performance
  • The Top Fuel 9.8 is a true chameleon on the trails. The bike's geometry and suspension travel, combined with the efficient RockShox Super Deluxe Ultimate, let you breeze through long cross-country trails and tackle technical descents with similar finesse.
  • Lightweight Yet Robust
  • The OCLV Mountain Carbon frame offers the best of both worlds. It's impressively lightweight for those steep, lung-busting climbs yet robust enough to handle rough descents without a hiccup.
  • Smart Wheel Sizing
  • Trek's smart wheel sizing (29" for larger sizes and 27.5" for smaller ones) ensures that riders of all sizes get the optimum fit and handling characteristics. XS frames receive 27.5" wheels, while sizes small and up get the 29er experience.

Cons

  • Pricey
  • The Top Fuel 9.8, with its advanced features and high-quality components, comes at a significant cost. ($8,699 base) While the performance justifies the price, it might still be out of reach for some riders.
  • May Not Be 'Enduro' Enough
  • While it's a capable descender, it might not be enough bike for riders who regularly ride steep and challenging enduro-style trails. The 130/120mm travel is perfect for most trails but may not offer the plushness desired for more aggressive, sustained downhill runs.

The Bottom Line

The 2023 Trek Top Fuel 9.8 is a commendable workhorse that thrives on most trails. Its versatility, lightweight frame, and smart-wheel sizing make it an excellent choice for riders seeking one bike that can do it all. However, it may not satisfy those cravings for aggressive downhill runs, and the price tag could deter budget-conscious riders.

When you're behind the bars of the Top Fuel 9.8, the trails seem to open up. You see uphill slogs as opportunities to test your fitness. You view descents as chances to hone your skills. And the occasional all-day epic ride? That's just your weekend fun. The Top Fuel 9.8, despite a few minor drawbacks, gives you the confidence and capability to take on anything and everything that comes your way. So, buckle up because the trails are calling.
