The Diverge is Specialized’s first gravel bike. It’s a "ride anywhere over anything" kind of bike. The Diverge is fast enough to race, but also at home on light singletrack, bikepacking, adventuring, and riding the road. It debuted in 2014, evolving from the Roubaix with a bit more clearance, 35mm tires max. In 2021, the third generation presented an adjustable FutureShock 2.0. 47mm tire clearance, the bottom bracket was raised for people who want cushier 650b tires, and the geometry was lengthened, slacked, and built around shorter stems. Specialized also added a SWAT box in most of the carbon-fiber downtubes.

When you ride an S-Works bike, you always get the lightest and stiffest carbon. Some folks may opt to buy the frameset and build their own bike, but when purchasing a complete build, you can expect Dura-Ace or Red level componentry. As Specialized has refined the S-Works Diverge, weight has dropped, with the most recent model weighing under 1,000g.

What kind of bike is a Specialized Diverge?

The Diverge is a prototypical gravel bike, with a small amount of frame travel added for the newest 2023 iteration (30mm) and wider tires allowing for comfortable riding on dirt roads.

Can a Specialized Diverge be a road bike?

Of course the Diverge can be used as a road bike, and is a capable one at that. The Diverge features drop handlebars, only a small amount of suspension travel, and the option to easily switch out tires more suitable for the road. It’s better suited for only occasional road use however as a purpose-built road bike would be lighter, have a more aggressive and efficient riding geometry, as well as no suspension.

2022 Specialized Diverge Comp Carbon Review - A TPC Rider's Quick Take

There’s something soulful about the crunch of gravel under a tire. We can’t help but think of these romantic tire-shredding visions when hopping on the 2023 Specialized Diverge Comp Carbon. Does the bike make good on these promises? Read on for our quick-take review.

Pros

  • Versatility King
  • The Diverge Comp Carbon is the Swiss Army knife for bikes. From weekend gravel grinds to bikepacking trips, this bike is your go-anywhere companion. The Future Shock 2.0 adds a layer of comfort on the rougher roads and trails.
  • Geometry and Handling
  • Specialized's reworked geometry makes for a bike that's agile enough for quick jaunts and stable enough for the long haul. The bike intuitively goes where you want it—cornering like a pro, climbing like a goat.
  • Storage and Accessory Options
  • With SWAT storage options, this bike is ready to pack up for the long haul. You can stow tools, a tube, and even a snack in the down tube. Less stuff in your pockets and saddlebag means more comfort over those long miles.

Cons

  • Cost vs. Components
  • The price point is reasonable for a carbon frame gravel bike, but some of the components don’t exactly scream ‘top-tier.’ For example, while the Shimano GRX groupset is serviceable, it's not as refined as some might expect at this price range.
  • Price: $4,200
  • Not a Pure Racer
  • If you're looking to dominate the gravel racing scene, you may find the Diverge a tad less aggressive in its setup. It's designed to be a jack-of-all-trades, so those seeking specialized performance may feel it lacks a certain edge.
  • Limited Wheelset
  • The stock wheelset is solid but not exceptional. Hardcore gravel enthusiasts may eventually upgrade to get the most out of this frame’s potential.

The Bottom Line

The 2023 Specialized Diverge Comp Carbon is less a bike and more an invitation—to explore and roam free. It's an all-arounder that can tackle anything you throw its way, even if it sacrifices a bit of specialization for that versatility.

For riders seeking a one-bike solution for road rides, gravel adventures, and bikepacking, the Diverge offers a compelling package. However, the purists looking for a race-focused machine or top-notch components might find it a little wanting in those departments.

So, would we recommend it? In a heartbeat, especially for those looking to explore the thick middle ground between tarmac and trail. With the Diverge Comp Carbon, you're not just buying a bike; you're investing in countless adventures that lie just off the beaten path.
